Five Centuries of Devotion In 1531, an indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, saw the glowing figure of the Virgin Mary on a hillside near present-day Mexico City. After she had identified herself to him, Our Lady asked that Juan build her a shrine in that same spot. Juan Diego informed his local bishop, who didn’t believe him and asked to provide proof of the apparitions. Juan Diego returned to the hill. The Virgin appeared again and told him to pick some flowers to present to the Archbishop. He arranged the flowers in his tilma (cloak). When he presented the tilma to the Archbishop, both discovered a life-size image of the Virgin Mary on the inside of the cloak. This image is known as Our Lady of Guadalupe.
