I don’t know if alps outdoorz intended for this application, but I have had the pack frame for years.Once I bought the pack “bag”, I didn’t want to give up the lashing points and pockets that originally came with my frame.With a little modification with some pliers to squeeze the pins through, I ran the bag, and also original frame side pockets all in one pin hole.All of the buckles, straps, and lashing points work extremely well together even though it was not intended to be combined. The amount of adjustability is immense, as opposed to one or the other configuration. I don’t know if this helps, but I have found that the two configurations, combined, will give you all of the room and lash points imaginable for packing anything out of the back country.
