The John Ownbey CWU-45/P is a leather version of the Nomex Air Force pilot's jacket. The original pilot's jackets were made from nylon fabric. The problem was that nylon melted in cases of aircraft fire. As technology improved, it became possible to make the jackets fire retardant. In the 1970s, the CWU (Cold Weather Uniform) line was created, both in summer, and winter weight. The CWU-45/P was the winter weight flight jacket. It was made from a fabric that was newly invented by Dupont, called Nomex. Nomex is known for its thermal, chemical and radiation resistance. Due to its interference with safety equipment, the bi-swing back was removed from the CWU45P jacket. This jacket, in Nomex is still being issued to Air Force pilots. The John Ownbey CWU-45P Flight Jacket is made with a goatskin leather shell, and quilted polyester lining. It features 2 front cargo pockets with snap closed flap covers. The shoulder has a pencil/utility pocket for easy access to your small necessities. The ribbed waistband and cuffs keep the warmth in, and the cold out.
