I was looking for a traditional stainless digging spade — something with a slightly greater angle than my near-vertical border spade — and I wanted something with an ash handle, made in the traditional English style, so I decided to give this one a try. My initial impression is that it is very well constructed. It is well finished and workmanship is high. It's also comfortable to use and slices through my garden's loamy soil with ease — though I do with its blade were a bit sharper. The angle is ideal — somewhere between the border spade and a true shovel — so it's perfect for turning soil and doing other standard garden jobs. Yes, it's more expensive than the typical stamped-metal version you can buy at your local hardware store, but how long will that last? I know this one will likely outlast me, and that's both good for me and good for the planet.
