If this had been one of my first Gatemouth Brown purchases this review would probably be one of the longest.Simply put, I wish I had bought this before Bogaloosa Boogie Man album/cd because that one has more of a country sound than Gatemouth Brown jamming with Hee Haw alumnus Roy Clark. But, thank god I had heard the praise Roy Clark receives as being a very respected guitar player. And the fact I wanted at least one Clarence Gatemouth Brown record on vinyl. Tidbit: Gatemouth apparently appeared on Hee Haw a couple times too...Anyways, the album is called MAKIN’ MUSIC and the album is amazing right down to assistance from the rather famed 5(!) Memphis Horns.Besides guitar Gatemouth adds his trademark violin and some harmonica. When Gate calls out from behind Roy Clark’s solid ‘Story’ vocals “Was she Nekid..?” during the jamming Talk About a Party, I laughed aloud.Roy wrote the 2 instrumentals on side 2 : Tabasco Road; and JH Boogie. This record has the best version of Louis Jordan’s Fleecie Moore tune Caledonia that I’ve heard . The jazzy tune is rocked up here Country jazz style and is more humorous. It’s difficult not to write a lot about this great band that includes Jim Keltner on drums.Steve Ripley deserves plaudits for adding some guitar and Producing the record.Garland is on keyboards. Lotsa fun cool stuff goin on here with banter and added background vocalists (there has to be ... for the “party” song et cetera ).Oh , and Gate’s great, bluesy song The Drifter is here too. If you know it ... nuff said. This record album came out in 1979.Clarence and Roy MAKIN’ MUSIC is 5 stars awesome. Not a bad thing to be said about great musicians on an inspired fun recording.
